The overcrowding at the regional animal shelter in San Marcos has been an ongoing issue for many months. How can this community pull together to help?
1. Adopt a pet; be sure you are prepared for the responsibility of pethood. Find the breed and temperament that best matches your life. Right now it’s only $22 to adopt!
2. Foster; this gives animals (esp. long stays) a break from the stress of the shelter and allows the dog or cat to blossom. Plus you gain wonderful insights that will aid a future adopter.
3. Donate; the shelter always needs items, from food to cleaning supplies to blankets.
4. Spread the word; share info with your social network and encourage others to get involved to begin to turn the ship around.
5. Find a stray? Try to find its humans before taking it to the shelter. There are multiple FB groups for lost pets – be sure to post there.
6. Dogs day out; sometimes a dog just needs a break from shelter life. A day out offers them a chance to walk, sniff, enjoy the sunshine (but not on hot pavement and never inside a parked vehicle) and stretch their legs.
And last, but probably THE MOST IMPORTANT: spay and neuter your pets. This is absolutely the best and most needed thing a pet’s human can do to help.
