Hays County Commissioners Court

Introduction

The Hays County Commissioners Court is the governing body of the county. This group oversees the functions and budget for all county-related business. Weekly court sessions take place at the Hays County Historic Courthouse, located at 111 E. San Antonio St., in San Marcos, Texas. The five-member body of elected officials hold court beginning at 9 a.m. each Tuesday at the Hays County Historic unless otherwise posted.

The Commissioners Court is comprised of five elected officials - a county judge and four commissioners. A county judge administratively oversees commissioners court meetings. The county judge sets the meeting agendas. If two or more commissioners request an item to be placed on the agenda, the county judge will include that item.

Commissioners Court members vote as a body where each court member has one vote per item and no one member has more power than any other member. Commissioners Court members sit on a variety of boards and commissions in which Hays County has a vested interest, e.g., CAMPO, CAPCOG, etc. Court members serve four-year terms and the seats are up for election on a staggered schedule. Each member holds public office hours where constituents can make an appointment to speak with his or her elected representative.

Meetings are live-streamed and archived. Videos are typically available on our website within 24 hours. Meeting minutes are recorded by the Hays County Clerk; that office also oversees the court video recordings.
